The kistka consists of a small funnel or cup attached to a handle. The funnel is filled with beeswax, which is then melted over a candle flame. Once the wax is molten, it flows through a tiny aperture at the tip of the funnel, enabling the artist to draw incredibly detailed patterns on the egg. The technique of Pysanky involves a careful layering of wax and dye. An egg is initially dyed a base color, often white. The artist then uses the kistka to apply wax to areas that should retain this base color. The egg is subsequently dipped into progressively darker dyes, with more wax applied at each stage to preserve the existing colors. Once the final layer of wax is applied and the egg is dyed its darkest color, the wax is melted off to reveal a multicolored, intricate pattern.
